Good Morning!
Good morning, beloved! On this Tuesday, September 22nd, we greet you with hearts full of gratitude for another day in God’s presence. Today, we’re called to sharpen our spiritual discernment—to distinguish between words that build us up in truth and words that set traps beneath our feet. May your eyes be opened and your spirit alert as you walk through this day with wisdom from above.
Today’s Prayer
Heavenly Father, we come before You asking for keen discernment in all our interactions today. Help us recognize the difference between genuine affirmation that honors You and flattery that serves hidden agendas. Guard our hearts from accepting praise that flows from impure motives, and guard our lips from offering the same to others. Make us people of truth who speak honestly and receive words wisely.
In Jesus’ name, we pray.
Amen.
Daily Inspiration
“Those who flatter their neighbors are spreading nets for their feet.” — Proverbs 29:5
This powerful proverb paints a vivid picture: flattery is not harmless compliment, but a carefully laid snare. The one who flatters often does so with ulterior motives—seeking favor, manipulation, or personal gain. And the one who receives flattery without discernment may find themselves entangled in compromising situations.
True encouragement points us toward Christ and builds our character. Flattery, however, inflates our ego and blinds us to our weaknesses. Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, understood this danger well. He witnessed the courts of power where honeyed words concealed treacherous intentions. Today, this same dynamic plays out in our workplaces, relationships, and even our churches. The antidote? Test every word against Scripture, consider the speaker’s motives, and remain anchored in the truth of who God says you are—not what others tell you to gain advantage.

Question of the day
How can I tell the difference between genuine encouragement and flattery?
Scripture provides clear guidance on this crucial distinction. Proverbs 27:6 tells us, “Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.” Genuine encouragement is rooted in truth and often accompanies honest feedback—even when difficult to hear. It points you toward growth in Christ and celebrates God’s work in your life, not merely your accomplishments.
Flattery, by contrast, tends to be excessive, untested by truth, and often comes with strings attached. Ask yourself: Does this praise align with reality? Does it encourage humility or pride? Does the person speaking have something to gain? True affirmation glorifies God; flattery glorifies the self. When in doubt, bring the words before the Lord in prayer and measure them against His Word.

Moment of Reflection
Consider today: Whose flattery am I accepting without testing its motive? Have I allowed smooth words to influence my decisions or cloud my judgment? Perhaps there’s a relationship where excessive praise has made you overlook red flags, or a situation where you’ve been swayed by compliments that served another’s agenda. Bring these to God and ask Him to reveal the truth hidden beneath pleasant words.
Thought for the day
Flattery conceals snares—this truth should transform how we both give and receive praise. In a culture that often celebrates affirmation at any cost, we must become students of discernment. The enemy has long used flattery as a weapon; even in Eden, the serpent’s words to Eve contained flattering implications about her potential to “be like God.”
When someone speaks highly of us, we should neither reject all praise cynically nor accept it blindly. Instead, we filter it through wisdom. Does this encouragement align with what I know to be true? Does it draw me closer to Christ or subtly toward compromise? Genuine affirmation feels different—it humbles us even as it encourages, because it points to God’s grace rather than our own greatness.
Likewise, let us examine our own speech. When we compliment others, do we speak truth for their benefit, or do we craft words designed to gain favor? Being people of integrity means our “yes” is yes and our encouragement is genuine—free from hidden hooks.
Closing Blessing
May the Lord grant you eyes to see beyond pleasant words and ears attuned to His truth. May He protect your steps from the snares laid by flattering tongues and make you a vessel of genuine, life-giving encouragement to everyone you encounter. Walk in wisdom today, beloved, and rest secure in the One whose words are always trustworthy and true.
