Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts open and ready. Stir within us a deep hunger for Your supernatural gifts. Forgive us for the times we’ve grown complacent, settling for ordinary when You offer extraordinary power. Awaken our spirits to pursue prophecy, healing, wisdom, and every gift You desire to pour out. Help us to follow the way of love while eagerly desiring these spiritual treasures. May we never stop pursuing all that You have made available to us.

Notice the active language Paul uses: “follow” and “eagerly desire.” These are not passive postures. God doesn’t force His gifts upon reluctant believers—He pours them out upon those who genuinely seek them with faith and love.
The early church operated in remarkable supernatural power because they pursued it intentionally. They prayed for boldness, gathered expectantly, and believed God for miracles. Somewhere along the way, many of us stopped pursuing. Perhaps disappointment crept in, or busyness crowded out our spiritual hunger. But here’s the beautiful truth: desired gifts are pursued gifts. When we actively seek what God offers, we position ourselves to receive. The power hasn’t diminished; our pursuit has.

Why do some Christians seem to operate in spiritual gifts while others don’t?
Scripture reveals that spiritual gifts are distributed by the Holy Spirit as He wills (1 Corinthians 12:11), yet Paul clearly instructs us to “eagerly desire” them (1 Corinthians 14:1). This suggests a partnership between God’s sovereignty and our pursuit. James 4:2 reminds us, “You do not have because you do not ask.” Some believers don’t operate in gifts simply because they’ve never earnestly sought them. Others may have allowed unbelief, unconfessed sin, or fear to create barriers. The gifts are available to all believers, but they flourish in atmospheres of faith, love, and active pursuit.

The phrase “eagerly desire” in the original Greek carries the sense of burning passion, zealous pursuit, even jealousy for something precious. This isn’t casual interest—it’s holy ambition. Paul understood that the church’s effectiveness depended on believers operating in supernatural power, not merely human effort.
Consider what happens when we stop pursuing: ministries become mechanical, prayers lose expectancy, and the supernatural presence of God becomes a distant memory rather than present reality. But when believers actively seek spiritual gifts—praying for them, stepping out in faith to exercise them, and growing in their use—the church becomes the vibrant, powerful body Christ intended.
Your pursuit matters. God responds to hungry hearts. He delights in children who ask for good gifts. Don’t let past disappointments or current distractions keep you from the supernatural life available to you. Pursue a spiritual gift today—ask, seek, knock, and watch what God does.
