How can I serve others when I feel spiritually exhausted?

Scripture makes clear that effective, sustainable ministry flows from intimacy with God, not sheer determination. In Mark 1:35, even Jesus—after a demanding day of healing and teaching—rose early to find a solitary place to pray. He modeled the rhythm of withdrawal and engagement, receiving and giving.

When you feel spiritually depleted, resist the temptation to push harder. Instead, step back. Sit at Jesus’ feet like Mary did (Luke 10:39-42). Let Him restore your soul beside quiet waters (Psalm 23:2-3). God never asks you to pour from an empty cup. He invites you to come, drink deeply, and then serve from the overflow of His grace within you.

Think back to a time when your ministry, service, or love for others flowed effortlessly—when you had just come from a rich season with God. Thought for the Day

There is a dangerous lie whispered to devoted believers: that busyness for God equals closeness to God. We fill our calendars with ministry activities, church responsibilities, and acts of service, believing that God measures our worth by our output. Yet slowly, imperceptibly, we find ourselves running on fumes—irritable, joyless, going through motions that once carried meaning.

The truth is that overflow fuels authentic ministry. A well that has run dry cannot refresh the thirsty traveler, no matter how desperately the well-keeper cranks the handle. Our spiritual lives operate the same way. When we neglect our own communion with Christ, our service becomes hollow performance rather than Spirit-empowered ministry.

Jesus invites us to a different way. “Come to Me,” He says, “all who are weary and burdened” (Matthew 11:28). Before the doing must come the dwelling. Get filled before you pour. This is not selfishness—it is wisdom. It is stewardship of the vessel God has entrusted to you.
