The Apostle Paul understood something profound about spiritual relationships. While he never minimized the importance of biological family, he recognized that spiritual parentage carries eternal weight. Paul had invested his life, his prayers, his tears, and his teaching into the believers at Corinth. He had birthed them into the faith through the gospel message.

Spiritual parents are those who have nurtured our souls, corrected us in love, and modeled Christ-likeness before our eyes. They may be pastors, mentors, Sunday school teachers, or faithful believers who simply took the time to disciple us. Their investment in our lives is a sacred trust. When we honor them, we acknowledge God’s sovereign design in placing them in our path—and we position ourselves to receive the spiritual inheritance they carry.

How can I practically honor a spiritual parent or mentor in my life?

Scripture gives us beautiful guidance on honoring those who lead us spiritually. Hebrews 13:7 instructs, “Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.” We honor spiritual parents through remembrance, gratitude, and imitation of their godly example.

Practical ways include expressing verbal appreciation, writing a heartfelt letter of thanks, supporting their ministry, praying consistently for them, and most importantly—living out the truths they taught us. First Thessalonians 5:12-13 adds, “Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work.” Honor flows through both words and actions, creating a legacy that continues through generations.

Honor releases heritage. This simple truth carries profound implications for our spiritual lives. In biblical culture, honor was the key that unlocked blessing and inheritance. When Elisha honored Elijah by faithfully following him to the very end, he received a double portion of his spirit. When Ruth honored Naomi, she stepped into a lineage that would include King David and ultimately Jesus Christ Himself.

The same principle operates in our lives today. When we honor those who have spiritually parented us, we position ourselves to receive what they carry. Their wisdom, their anointing, their spiritual insights—these become accessible to us through the posture of honor. Conversely, when we dishonor or forget those who shaped us, we unknowingly close doors to our own inheritance.

Consider the mentors God has placed in your life. Have you thanked them recently? Have you acknowledged their sacrifice?
