Today’s Prayer

Heavenly Father, put a song in our night season. When darkness surrounds us and chains of circumstance bind our spirits, help us to lift our voices in worship rather than complaint. Teach us to trust You in the midnight hours, knowing that You are working even when we cannot see. Fill our mouths with hymns of praise that shake the foundations of every prison we face.

“About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.” — Acts 16:25

Picture the scene: Paul and Silas, beaten and bloody, their feet fastened in stocks in the innermost cell of a Roman prison. Every human instinct would cry out for complaint, for despair, for anger at their unjust treatment. Yet in that midnight darkness, they chose to sing.

Their worship wasn’t because of their circumstances—it was in spite of them. And what happened next changed everything. The earth shook, chains fell loose, and doors swung open. Their midnight song became a key that unlocked not only their physical prison but also opened the door for an entire household to come to faith in Christ. Your praise in the dark has power you cannot yet see.

How should I respond when I feel like God is silent during my struggles?

Scripture assures us that God’s apparent silence is never absence. Psalm 34:18 tells us, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Even when we cannot sense His presence, He draws near to our pain. Isaiah 45:3 promises that God gives us “treasures of darkness, riches stored in secret places,” suggesting that some of God’s greatest gifts are discovered only in our darkest seasons. Rather than demanding answers, we’re called to trust His character when we cannot trace His hand.
