Today’s Prayer

Heavenly Father, we come before You with humble hearts, asking that You open our eyes to see every stranger as sacred. Remove the blinders of busyness and self-absorption that cause us to walk past those You have placed in our path. Grant us the courage to extend welcome, the warmth to offer kindness, and the wisdom to recognize Your presence in every person we meet. Transform our indifference into intentional love, that we might be vessels of Your hospitality in a world that so desperately needs it.

“I was a stranger and you invited Me in.” — Matthew 25:35

These words from our Lord carry a profound and transformative truth: when we welcome the stranger, we welcome Christ Himself. Jesus identifies so closely with the vulnerable, the unfamiliar, and the overlooked that He considers our treatment of them as treatment of Him personally.

In ancient Near Eastern culture, hospitality wasn’t merely polite—it was sacred duty. Travelers depended on the kindness of strangers for survival. Today, while the context has changed, the spiritual principle remains eternal. Every person standing outside our circle of familiarity represents an invitation from God. The stranger at the coffee shop, the new family at church, the unfamiliar neighbor—each one carries hidden blessings waiting to be discovered. When we overcome our natural tendency toward the comfortable and known, we position ourselves to experience divine appointments that can change both lives forever.

Question of the day

Why does welcoming strangers matter so much to God, and how does it relate to my spiritual growth?

Scripture reveals that God has a special heart for strangers because He knows what it means to be one. In Deuteronomy 10:18-19, He reminds Israel: “He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you… And you are to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt.” Our willingness to welcome others directly reflects our understanding of grace—we who were once strangers to God’s covenant have been welcomed into His family. Hebrews 13:2 adds urgency: “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.” Welcoming strangers stretches our faith, breaks down pride, and cultivates Christlike character in us.

Strangers carry hidden blessings—this truth echoes throughout Scripture and human experience. Abraham welcomed three mysterious travelers and received the promise of Isaac. Rahab sheltered Israelite spies and secured salvation for her entire family. The disciples on the road to Emmaus invited a “stranger” to dinner and discovered the risen Christ.

Every profound relationship in your life began with someone being a stranger. Your closest friend, your spouse, your mentor—all were once unknown faces. The difference between a stranger remaining a stranger and becoming a blessing is simply the bridge of welcome that someone chose to build.

Yet our modern world conspires against hospitality. We walk with earbuds in, eyes on screens, hearts protected by invisible walls. We’ve confused safety with isolation and convenience with connection. But the Kingdom of God operates differently. It expands through open doors, extended tables, and hearts willing to make room for the unfamiliar.

Today, challenge yourself to see strangers not as interruptions but as invitations—divine appointments wrapped in ordinary moments.

May the Lord who welcomed you when you were far off now fill you with that same welcoming spirit.
